eagles and new york city triathlon roller skates 世纪互联 i''m looking forward to having the time to do some artwork again, someday. for the past few months i''ve had back-to-back freelance book projects, taking up a good portion of my free time and creative energy. not that i''m complaining. i enjoy the work, and need it. the first book project is finally roller skates available on amazon.com, and i will post about it later this afternoon here and on my design blog. www.google.comyesterday, though i was driving and not able to snap a photo of it, i saw a bald eagle for the first time. it swooped down over the highway in front of my car, leaving me agape and shouting "oh my god!" to the windshield. white head, yellow beak, brown body, white tail. amazing. stunning. though i recognized what it was immediately, for half a second i talked myself out of it. "you''re imagining things" my mind scolded, "that''s a seagull." seagull? tonight i''m going to watch my first roller derby bout - a double header of our men''s and women''s teams new york city triathlon (the dirty dozen and western mass destruction, respectively) against the new york shock exchange (men''s team) and the garden city girls. afterwards, will i want riedell roller skates even more than i do now? you bet. You would think with all the kids on our street that there would be bikes everywhere. But that was not the case. Sandra had a bike and later Doug got one. But that was all. Of course there were other families that had bikes but not every kid had their own bike. I remember trying to ride Sandra’s bike. It was too big for me but I was determined. I persisted and fell and skinned my knees and elbows many times. Aunt Mima was sure I was going to kill myself. Eventualy I mastered the bike and Life was Good. My main mode of transportation after I grew out of the tricycle was roller skates. Talk about skinned knees and elbows. We did not have helmets and knee and elbow pads. I had scabbed knees for years. Scares upon scars. My roller skates were the kind you had to attach to your own shoes. You had a special key that would tighten them to your shoes. It was best to use leather soled shoes. Canvas shoes did not work very well. Luke and I headed into town to meet Justin, Sarah and some of their coworkers and skate the circuit. We didn''t have skates, but the city offers free skate rental, and we got in line behind 85 fourteen-year-olds to get some skates. Unfortunately the skates ran out before we each got a pair. I guess I''ll have to camp out next week to make sure we have a good spot in line. There was plenty of good people watching, though. I was amazed at the number of people who came to this event - the event''s website says 10,000 people participated in last Wednesday''s skate. We all got the feeling that this skate night was the place to see and be seen. People were dressed to the nines and trying to look their coolest even though in 2 hours they''d all be drenched in sweat. It reminded me a little of going to theriedell roller skates skating or ice skating rinks when I was younger. Hopefully next week I''ll be able to report on what it was like to skate, but in the meantime here are some pictures of what we saw skate-free. www.yahoo.comSome of the bars around the starting point of the skate extended their terraces and set up tall tables so that people could come in in their skates and have a drink new york city triathlon. It''s a genius idea. It made me feel even more dwarfed by the Dutch people, though. Those rollerblades added a good 4 or 5 inches to their already taller than me heights. Kickin'' it old school in roller skates. Lots of people were wearing roller skates, which haven''t been seen in the U.S. since 1989. I''ve even seen people in the park skating in skates like these. One day I saw a guy who had set up cones as a little obstacle course to test his skills. The traditional roller skate is alive and well in Europe.
